Microds Have Fun In The Sun Sunday (9/10/00)

The Syracuse Microd Club ran their annual “Back To School Race” Sunday afternoon under the hot sun.

In Junior Novice, Brittany Zacharias took the early lead in her 27.  On lap 5, Ryan Iannolo’s brother Tyler Iannolo (who was in a microd for the first time in competition) took second from the 15 of Morgan Wilcox.  Zacharias ended up in the number one position across the line for the checkered, with Iannolo ending up with a strong second place performance.  Wilcox would end up in the third position.

It was Kyle Wilcox taking the lead at the beginning of the Novice Microd feature event, but on lap 13 he found himself facing the wrong way after attempting to pass a lapped car.  This would put Andrew Ferguson in the lead, and he was the eventual winner.  Second went to Tyler Dufford, and third across the line was Kyle Wilcox.  Kenyon Alexander in the number 1 and David Barber in the 22 rounded out the top five.

In Stock Open Wheel, Adam Fusco led the way in the early stages.  Danny Sanford (who has moved up from Novice Open Wheel for the rest of the season) was running a solid second behind Fusco when Fusco retired from the race with a broken chain, giving Sanford the lead.  This led to a last lap duel between Syracuse regular Danny Sanford, and Midstate Club regular Chris Carmen.  Coming out of turn four on the way to the checkered, Carmen saw an opening on the bottom.  At the line, it was Sanford by about six inches.  Carmen took the runner up spot, and third was the 10 of Lisa Thomas.

Katelyn Bolen led briefly in Super Stock Open Wheel before Chris Natoli in his 33 powered by her on lap 2.  Brian Koch moved into second on lap 5, and “G-Force” Gretchen Forbes moved into the top three mid-race.  Natoli “laid the smack down” by pulling away from the field and taking a half-track win.  Koch, Forbes, Tommy Juno, and Jamie Lee rounded out the top five.

Two Novice Open Wheel graduates dominated the Stock Microd feature, as “Superman” Spencer Smith and Ryan Iannolo were running in the top two throughout the race.  Iannolo was the early leader of the event, but Smith made a pass on lap 6 to take the top spot.  After the 3D of David Major dropped out under green flag conditions, Iannolo powered by Smith to retake the lead on lap 13.  Smith would steal the lead again the following lap, but it was on lap 19 that Iannolo made a final pass on Smith and would not look back.  Smith took second, and Ashley Wescott was third.

In Limited Microd, Tori Wilcox passed heat winner Noah “Eagle” Ennis on lap 11 for the lead, while Joe Gwilt sat in the third position.  This would be how they crossed the line, as “Terminator” Wilcox took the feature win.

The “Hurricane” Sean Kelly took the Super Stock Microd win in his 66.  Ryan Troup ended up in the second position and Pat Lucas took his 53 to third.

Novice Open Wheel was a two-car battle between the “Little Goalie” Derek Natoli and the “Lethal Weapon” Tommy Felicia.  At the end, it was Natoli finding the checkered first.  Natoli also took the heat win in his number 5.

The next microd event at the Syracuse Microd Club will be the annual Greg Miller event Sunday, September 17.  This will be a combined event with the quarter-midgets.  Admission is free, races start at 1pm.

Microd Finishes From The Greg Miller Event Sunday (9/17/00)

In Stock Open Wheel, the “Pillsbury Doughboy” Adam Fusco trailed the 41 of Alex Mosher in the early stages of the race.  In lapped traffic midway through the event, Mosher spun out in turn two giving Fusco the front position.  On the restart, Erik Smith and Andrew Schartner swapped positions fiercely trying to get by the 1 of Fusco, but could not do it in time.  Fusco came away with the victory, Erik Smith was second in his 91, and third was the 9 of Andrew Schartner.  Mosher came back to finish fourth and Danny Sanford rounded out the top five.

Katelyn Bolen and Chris Natoli spun in the early going of Super Stock Open Wheel, causing a four car jam in the first and second corner.  This put the 33 of Natoli, the 7 of Jamie Lee, and Seth Palmer in the 25 out of competition.  It wasn’t long before the “G-Force” of Gretchen Forbes took command and didn’t look back.  Second went to Tommy Juno, and third was the 27 of Katelyn Bolen.

In Stock Microd, “Superman” Spencer Smith was victorious but not without some stiff competition from Ryan Iannolo, who trailed him across the line for second.  Alex Mosher crossed the line third, and Ashley Wescott rounded out the field.

Sean Kelly was dominant in Super Stock Microd in his number 66.  Ryan Troup was the runner up in second and third went to the 35 of Pat Lucas.  In Limited Microd (which was a combined race with Super Stock Microd), Tori Wilcox beat out Andrew Schartner for the victory in her number 30.

In the Novice Microd feature event, Kyle Wilcox crossed the line ahead of Andrew Ferguson for the victory.  Dan Button (who is not a Syracuse Microd Club member) came to race and finished third.  Ricky Donavon, Tyler Dufford and David Barber rounded out the rest of the top five.

In Novice Open Wheel, the “Little Goalie” Derek Natoli captured another victory, with the “Lethal Weapon” Tommy Felicia finishing with a strong second.  Ricky Donavon took his new Open Wheel Microd to a third place finish.

Brittany Zacharias came away with the Junior Novice victory in her 27.  Second was Ryan Iannolo (this was his second ever feature start) in the 08, and Morgan Wilcox rounded out the top three in her 15.

In the “mother’s race”, Jane Schartner took her son’s car to victory lane, as pulled away with the victory.  Kelly Forbes finished in the second position in her daughter’s 44.  In the “father’s race”, Rusty Natoli drove his son’s car rather aggressive race to capture the win.  Tom Baker took the Schartner machine (that Jane Schartner took to victory) to a strong third place performance.  In the “anybody’s race”, Sean Kelly took the 50 of Ryan Troup’s car to the checkered flag.  Dustin Geers finished second in the 44 of Gretchen Forbes’ open wheel.

The next microd fun race will be held Sunday, September 24th at the New York State Fairgrounds.  Admission is free.
